Mercy Events Put Spotlight on Lung Cancer

How much do you know about the deadliest form of cancer in the United States? Let Mercy get you up to speed during Lung Cancer Awareness Month.

This Saturday, Nov. 16, Mercy Cancer Resource Center and the American Cancer Society will host a lung cancer awareness and tobacco cessation event at Hy-Vee in Springfield.

“Each year, more people die of lung cancer than of colon, breast and prostate cancers combined,” said Amanda Gray, oncology program coordinator for Mercy Springfield. “The event at Hy-Vee will help create awareness about lung cancer, its signs, symptoms and the best way to reduce your risk.”

The free, educational event at Hy-Vee will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, at 1720 W. Battlefield Rd. Everyone is welcome to attend.

The following week, artwork from the traveling exhibit “Lilly Oncology on Canvas” will be on display throughout the Chub O’Reilly Cancer Center. Lilly Oncology launched the biennial competition in 2004; since then, more than 4,100 Americans touched by cancer have submitted artwork and narratives chronicling their journeys.

The pieces of art, which are also presented by National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NCCS), will be on display Monday, Nov. 18 through Friday, Nov. 22. The cancer center is located at 2055 S.
