Hospital Goes Pink

On Oct. 9, Mercy Hospital Springfield will flip a switch and take on a pink hue for the month of October. This year’s lighting of the patient tower for Breast Cancer Awareness Month will also mark a milestone for Mercy’s Breast Center. It has just achieved a three-year full accreditation from the American College of Surgeons, National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC).

“Women who want the best breast care available can stay right here in Springfield,” said Dr. John Bumberry, Mercy general surgeon. “This accreditation proves Mercy offers nationally acclaimed breast care that meets or exceeds the highest standards in the country.”

Breast centers that achieve the NAPBC three-year accreditation must meet 90 percent of 27 quality measurements. Mercy’s Breast Center met all of them, including the ability of multiple specialists to coordinate patients’ care.

The accreditation serves as reminder that early detection and appropriate treatments can help women stay one step ahead of breast cancer. It’s why the community is invited to wear pink and lace up their tennis shoes for a walk around the Mercy campus prior to the lighting ceremony. At the end of the walk, participants can enjoy refreshments and a brief ceremony.
